Every day, companies accumulate gigabytes of information that requires structured and secure storage. Storage systems (SSDs) address the challenge of centralizing and managing information, balancing availability, security and cost.
Storage technology has evolved significantly in recent years, from simple disk arrays to tiered systems that can adapt to specific business needs. With the right storage system, companies can handle large amounts of data without worrying about storage space or access speeds.
What is storage?
Adata storage system (DSS) is a complex of hardware and software designed to reliably store, process and provide access to information. Unlike conventional computers with local disks, a storage system is a specialized fault-tolerant solution optimized for working with large amounts of data.
Physically, a storage system is a set of storage devices (hard disk drives, solid state drives, HDDs and SSDs) integrated into a single system and managed by special software.
The main functions of a storage system are:
- Centralized storage - combining disparate data in a single managed space;
- Information protection - providing fault tolerance through duplication of data and system components;
- Optimization of resource utilization - intelligent distribution of data across different types of storage devices;
- Storage virtualization - representing physical resources as logical volumes;
- Performance management - provide fast access to frequently used data and manage QoS (Quality of Service) policies;
- Scaling - increasing capacity and performance without interrupting operations.
Storage not only stores information, but also actively manages it, automating processes that would require manual intervention in conventional storage systems.
How storage is organized
The storage architecture includes several interconnected tiers, each of which contributes to the overall functionality of the system:
Physical Tier
- Data storage devices:
- HDDs (hard disk drives) - provide large capacity at an affordable price;
- SSDs (solid state drives) - faster access speeds
- NVMe SSDs - ultra-fast drives;
- Controllers - control modules that coordinate the operation of the system. Typically, a storage system includes a minimum of two controllers to provide fault tolerance.
- Cache memory - for temporary storage of frequently requested data. Controllers use it to speed up access to information and buffer write operations.
- Network interfaces - provide connection of storage systems to servers via various protocols (Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NVMe over TCP, NFS, etc.).
- Disk shelves - enclosures for placing storage devices.
Data organization layer
- RAID arrays - groups of disks working as a single unit, providing different levels of protection and performance.
- Disk Pools - Combine multiple RAID groups into a common space.
- Block devices - logical partitions that are shared with servers. From a server's perspective, a volume looks like a regular disk.
Program level
- Storage operating system - specialized software optimized for storage management.
- Data management systems:
- Deduplication - removing duplicate blocks of data;
- Compression - compression of information to save space;
- Thin Provisioning - dynamic allocation of disk space;
- Snapshots - snapshots of data state;
- Replication - copying data to other systems.
- Management Interface - typically a web interface or software console for storage administration.
Data access level
- Block access - data transfer in blocks via Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NVMe over TCP.
- File access - file-level operation via NFS and SMB/CIFS.
- Object access - storing data as objects with metadata.
Types of data storage systems

How to choose a storage system?
Selecting a storage system is a multifactorial task that requires analyzing current needs and prospects of IT infrastructure development. A properly selected storage system should match the workload profile, budget and specifics of the company's business processes.
Assessing needs and workloads
Before selecting a storage system, it is necessary to analyze the nature of data and applications:
- Data volume - current and projected growth over 3-5 years
- Nature of data access - type of operations, block size, random or sequential access;
- Latency sensitivity - criticality of response times for services;
- Availability requirements - allowable downtime (RPO/RTO);
- Technological sovereignty requirements - compliance with the requirements of state regulators and import substitution capabilities.
Main characteristics of storage systems
Evaluate performance for your application
Don't chase abstractly high numbers - focus on the real needs of your applications. IOPS is critical for databases, MBps is more important for video editors, and latency is critical for transactional systems.
Build in room for growth
Choose a storage solution with capacity to spare and flexible scalability. The ideal solution will allow you to add new disk shelves without interrupting operations and supports multiple drive types so you can adapt to changing needs.
Don't skimp on reliability
Check how well the system is protected against failure: does it have redundant controllers and power supplies, what RAID levels are supported, are there automatic data recovery mechanisms in place. Remember that the cost of downtime and data loss is usually many times the price difference between a basic and fault-tolerant configuration.
Choose appropriate access protocols
For high-load databases we recommend block access (especially NVMe over TCP for maximum performance), for file storage NFS or SMB/CIFS is optimal, and for cloud applications you should consider object access (S3-compliant).
Take advantage of modern management technologies
Technologies such as Thin Provisioning allow you to utilize available space more efficiently, deduplication and compression significantly reduce the actual amount of data stored, and snapshots and clones provide fast backups and test environments without duplicating data.
Use scenarios for different types of businesses
Low-end systems (up to 200,000 IOPS):
- Optimal for tasks with low performance requirements: file servers, data archiving, backup;
- Typical throughput: up to 5 GB/s; latency: more than 5 ms;
- Key criteria: cost-effective storage, ease of administration, reliability;
- Example: ITPOD Hybrid HYB-100 is a hybrid system with an optimal combination of HDD and SSD for cost-effective storage with acceptable performance.
